On-line mediation is an expanding area of dispute resolution and an increasingly popular one. It offers an affordable option for undertaking mediation where perhaps geographical constraints, or finding a suitable location have not made face to face mediation a viable or cost-effective option. It is also an excellent solution where a party is unable to attend the mediation in person, perhaps due to disability or where relations have broken down to such an extent that violence may ensue.

It works in the same way as face to face mediation and applies the same principles:

• It is Voluntary
• It is Confidential
• The mediator is impartial
• It is Non-judgemental
• It is quick to set up and can reach a speedy conclusion to a dispute

The difference between on-line is mediation and traditional mediation is that rather than meetings taking place in a physical location, meetings are conducted in virtual mediation rooms on the Internet. This alleviates a potential problem of all parties to the mediation having to be available at the same location at the same time.
